About this ranking

The sum, over the contestant's own singles, of the latest RIAA certification of each single. Single units are never added to album units, and the total is not a count of records sold. Featured appearances on another artist's single are excluded. A band single counts for the contestant who was the band's lead vocalist (in a duo, each singer) on the release date; other members never receive it. Definition in the methodology.

Eligible
Every finalist of U.S. American Idol seasons 1–24 in the dataset. Lifetime figures; each value carries its own measurement date.
Listed
Everyone with a published single in the record, including band singles credited to a lead vocalist or a singer of a duo.
Band credit
A band release counts for the band’s lead vocalist (in a duo, each singer) on the release date, shown “with” the band. Other members never receive band figures.
