About this ranking
The sum, over the contestant's own albums, EPs, compilations and live albums, of the latest RIAA certification of each release. A certification is a threshold that the release passed on a date. It is not a measured sales total, and since 2016 it includes streaming-equivalent units. Singles are excluded. An alternate edition counts once, with its main release. A multi-disc set counts at the level on its record; the site does not multiply it by disc count. A band release counts for the contestant who was the band's lead vocalist (in a duo, each singer) on the release date; other members never receive it. Band totals are also shown separately. A contestant whose releases were checked and have no certification has a known zero. A contestant not yet checked has no value. Definition in the methodology.
