About this ranking

A contestant-level total of albums sold in the United States, counted as pure sales: physical and digital album purchases as tracked by Nielsen SoundScan (now Luminate). Streams and track-equivalent units are excluded. A named source must report the total on a stated date. Each total is a cumulative snapshot up to its own measurement date, so totals from different dates are not synchronized. The site never adds snapshots of one artist together and never adds album-level figures to make a total. A band total counts for a contestant who founded the band and was its lead vocalist (in a duo, a singer) on the date of the total; it is added to that contestant's solo total, and when the two dates differ the sum is a lower bound. Other members never receive a band total; it is shown beside them. Definition in the methodology.

Unit

Territory

United States

Eligible

Every finalist of U.S. American Idol seasons 1–24 in the dataset. Lifetime figures; each value carries its own measurement date.

Listed

Everyone with a published album, EP or other album release in the record, including band releases credited to a lead vocalist or a singer of a duo.

Band credit

A band’s total counts for a lead vocalist (in a duo, a singer) who founded the band and still fronted it on the date of the total, shown “with” the band. Other members never receive band figures.
